How to Play Rummy

Rummy is one of the most popular card games in the world, and the foundation for an entire family of meld-based games. The goal is simple: form your hand into sets (same rank) and runs (consecutive same suit) of 3 or more cards, lay them down on the table, and be the first to go out by emptying your hand. Deadwood left in your opponent's hand counts as penalty points.

📋 Rules

1

The Deal

10 cards are dealt to each player from a standard 52-card deck. The next card is placed face-up to start the discard pile. The remaining cards form the draw pile.

2

Drawing

On your turn, draw one card — either the top card of the draw pile (face-down) or the top card of the discard pile (face-up).

3

Melding

After drawing, you may lay down melds from your hand onto the table. A meld is either a Set (3-4 cards of the same rank, different suits) or a Run (3+ consecutive cards of the same suit, e.g. 4♥ 5♥ 6♥).

4

Laying Off

You may also add cards from your hand to existing melds on the table. For example, adding a 7♥ to an existing run of 4♥ 5♥ 6♥, or adding a fourth card to a set of three.

5

Discarding

End your turn by discarding one card face-up onto the discard pile. You must always discard to end your turn.

6

Going Out

When you play all your cards (through melding, laying off, and discarding), you go out and win the round. Your opponent's remaining cards are scored as penalty points.

7

Scoring

Face cards (J, Q, K) = 10 points, Aces = 1 point, number cards = face value. The first player to accumulate 100+ penalty points loses the game.

🧠 Strategy Tips

  • Keep cards that can form multiple melds — a 7 of hearts could be part of a 7-7-7 set OR a 6-7-8 of hearts run.
  • Meld as soon as you can to reduce deadwood. Don't hold melds hoping for a bigger play — going out fast is key.
  • Watch what your opponent discards and picks up to figure out what melds they're building. Avoid discarding cards that help them.
  • Pick from the discard pile only if the card immediately completes or extends a meld. Drawing from the pile keeps your strategy hidden.
  • Discard high-value cards (face cards, 10s) early to minimize penalty if your opponent goes out before you.
  • Lay off cards onto existing table melds whenever possible — every card off your hand reduces your risk.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Rummy and Gin Rummy?

In standard Rummy, you lay melds on the table during play and can lay off onto any table meld. In Gin Rummy, you hold all cards in hand until someone knocks or gets gin (0 deadwood), then reveal melds all at once. Gin Rummy also has the undercut mechanic.

Can I pick up multiple cards from the discard pile?

In standard Rummy, you can only take the top card of the discard pile. Some variants allow taking multiple cards, but our version follows standard rules.

What happens if the draw pile runs out?

The discard pile (except the top card) is shuffled and becomes the new draw pile. Play continues normally.

Can I lay off on the same turn I meld?

Yes! You can meld and lay off as many times as you want on a single turn before discarding. The more cards you play, the closer you are to going out.

Do Aces go high or low in runs?

In standard Rummy, Aces are low only (A-2-3 is valid, but Q-K-A is not). Aces are worth 1 point in scoring.
