How to Play Euchre
Euchre is a fast-paced trick-taking card game hugely popular in the American Midwest and parts of Canada. Played with a 24-card deck (9 through Ace), two teams of two compete to win tricks by calling trump and leveraging the powerful Bower cards. First team to 10 points wins.
📋 Rules
The Deck
Euchre uses a 24-card deck: 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace of each suit. Four players sit in two partnerships — you and the player across from you (North) vs. the two opponents (West and East).
Dealing & Turn-Up
Five cards are dealt to each player. The top card of the remaining pile is turned face-up. This card's suit is proposed as trump in the first round of bidding.
Bidding Round 1
Starting left of the dealer, each player can "Order Up" the turned-up suit as trump (dealer picks up the card and discards one), or pass. If all four pass, a second round begins.
Bidding Round 2
Each player can name any suit other than the turned-down suit as trump, or pass. If everyone passes again, the dealer must call a suit — known as "stick the dealer."
The Bowers
The two highest trump cards are the Bowers. The Right Bower (Jack of trump) is the highest card in the game. The Left Bower (Jack of the same color as trump) is the second-highest, and counts as a trump card for all purposes.
Going Alone
The player who calls trump may "go alone" — their partner sits out, and they play all 5 tricks solo. If they take all 5 tricks, their team scores 4 points instead of the usual 2.
Playing Tricks
The player left of the dealer leads the first trick. Players must follow the led suit if possible (the Left Bower counts as trump, not its printed suit). Highest trump wins; if no trump, highest of the led suit wins.
Scoring
The team that called trump ("makers") needs 3+ tricks for 1 point, or all 5 for 2 points. If the defenders take 3+ tricks, they "euchre" the makers and score 2 points. A lone player sweeping all 5 scores 4 points. First to 10 wins.
🧠 Strategy Tips
- Having both Bowers (Right + Left) is almost always worth calling trump. Even one Bower with 2-3 additional trump cards is a strong hand.
- When your partner calls trump, play your best cards to help them win tricks — don't hold back your Aces.
- Lead with trump early to strip opponents of their trump cards, especially if you hold both Bowers.
- Consider going alone when you hold the Right Bower, Left Bower, and the Ace of trump — you likely can sweep all 5 tricks for 4 points.
- When defending, try to keep your highest cards for later tricks. If the maker leads trump, play low if you can't beat it.
- Pay attention to what suit has been turned down — opponents likely don't have strength in that suit.
- Short-suiting (being void in a non-trump suit) is powerful — it lets you trump in when that suit is led.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What are the Bowers in Euchre?
The Bowers are the two most powerful trump cards. The Right Bower is the Jack of the trump suit — the highest card in the game. The Left Bower is the Jack of the other suit of the same color (e.g., if hearts is trump, the Jack of diamonds is the Left Bower). The Left Bower is treated as a trump card in all respects.
What does "euchre" mean?
If the team that called trump (the "makers") fails to take at least 3 of the 5 tricks, they have been "euchred." The defending team scores 2 points. This is the defensive team's primary scoring opportunity.
What is "stick the dealer"?
In stick-the-dealer rules, if all players pass in both bidding rounds, the dealer is forced to call a trump suit. This prevents endless re-deals and keeps the game moving.
When should I go alone?
Go alone when you have a very strong hand — typically both Bowers plus another high trump, or a Bower with the Ace and King of trump. The reward is 4 points (vs 2 for a sweep with your partner), but the risk is losing without your partner's help.
Why does the Left Bower change suits?
The Left Bower rule is what makes Euchre unique. When hearts is trump, the Jack of diamonds becomes a heart for all game purposes — you must play it when hearts are led, and it ranks above all other trump except the Right Bower (Jack of hearts).
